Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
