Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
